UNIQLO’s business history includes both franchise stores and a documented international joint venture. Those structures deserve a precise explanation: Japan’s employee-linked franchise history is different from a strategic market-entry partnership with an established retail group. A serious investor proposal must address the relevant structure and the commercial value the partner contributes.

UNIQLO franchise numbers: what the company reports
Fast Retailing’s FY2025 outlet table reports:
| UNIQLO network | Stores |
|---|---|
| Worldwide | 2,519 |
| Japan | 794 |
| Directly operated in Japan | 784 |
| Franchised in Japan | 10 |
| International | 1,725 |
Fast Retailing’s January 2015 investor Q&A described its franchise stores at that time as operated by experienced employees. The historical explanation and the FY2025 count establish a franchise history; they do not establish an open programme for outside applicants.
UNIQLO’s public franchise notice does not offer a third-party franchise programme. Investors should distinguish that position from the separate question of a specifically negotiated strategic partnership.
The Philippines joint venture: a documented precedent
On 12 October 2011, Fast Retailing announced an agreement with SM Retail to establish Fast Retailing Philippines, Inc. to open and manage UNIQLO stores in the Philippines.
This is a primary-source example of joint-venture market entry. The announcement identified SM’s established retail operations and its wider group’s mall and property activities. It does not announce a current invitation for new joint ventures or disclose a standard investment package that another investor can purchase.
Our commercial interpretation is straightforward: a strategic partner must bring assets that improve market entry and execution. Retail experience, property access, local infrastructure and management capability are specific contributions that an investor can document.
What a UNIQLO partnership proposal must demonstrate
The proposal should identify the market opportunity and explain why the investor is equipped to develop it. Relevant evidence includes consumer spending, suitable retail catchments, access to flagship locations, an operating team and a funded development plan.
For an established retail group, the case should quantify the value of its estate, logistics and local management. For a property group, it should identify the locations and commercial terms it can deliver, while establishing who would operate the retail business.
A minority investment, a joint venture, a property transaction and a franchise licence allocate control and responsibilities differently. Presenting them as interchangeable obscures the decision the brand is being asked to make.
UNIQLO franchise cost and joint-venture capital
There is no verified public UNIQLO franchise price for outside investors in the cited sources. A proposed joint venture requires a negotiated capital plan, ownership structure and governance agreement rather than a generic franchise-fee quotation.
The investment assessment should cover premises, fit-out, stock, systems, recruitment, distribution and working capital. For a multi-store market entry, add central management and the funding required for each expansion phase.
The governance discussion is equally material: who approves new stores, commits capital, controls budgets, appoints management and decides dividends or exit? A percentage shareholding does not answer those questions on its own. They belong in the transaction design and legal documentation.
What Star Brands can do for a qualified investor
Star Brands Consulting Group supports bespoke market-entry assessments, investor qualification and partnership preparation. For UNIQLO, our work is to develop a substantive strategic proposal and assess the appropriate engagement route, rather than sell an unverified franchise allocation.
We assess the target market, the investor’s contribution, the proposed operating structure and the development economics. Where engagement is appropriate, industry relationships can support contact with the relevant counterparties. An introduction is part of a process; any partnership requires the brand’s commercial decision and agreement.
Submit your UNIQLO market-entry brief with your company profile, target country, available capital, retail or property portfolio and proposed management team. The objective is a decision-ready investment case that states exactly what you bring, what you seek and how the business would be funded and operated.
