United Colors of Benetton store entrance

Updated 8 October 2026. Original publication date retained.

The quality of a Benetton investment depends on the store economics and the agreement behind it. Before discussing an opening date, establish who owns stock, who controls promotions and which party carries the risk of unsold merchandise. Our Benetton franchise guide explains the documented retail models and current network context.

Check the commercial structure

Obtain the proposed agreement from the authorised counterparty. Identify whether it is a franchise, wholesale supply or another approved arrangement. Record the legal entity, permitted brand use, product categories, territory and sales channels. A product invoice alone does not establish permission to operate a branded store.

Follow the cash through the merchandise cycle

Map the dates for placing orders, paying deposits, receiving merchandise and settling balances. Compare them with the expected selling season. Calculate the peak funding requirement, including stock already paid for but not yet sold.

Agree how markdowns, defective goods, returns and remaining inventory will be handled. Test a downside case in which a collection sells more slowly and a larger share clears at a discount. The relevant margin is after those reductions and landed product costs.

Underwrite the property separately

A store needs a credible customer catchment and a rent it can support. Measure local competition, average transaction values and the proposed selling area. Include service charges, fit-out obligations and reinstatement costs as well as headline rent.

Align the lease term with brand approval, supply continuity and the investment recovery period. Seek legal review of situations in which the commercial agreement ends while lease obligations continue.

Identify the commitments that survive a weak year

  • Minimum product purchases or development obligations.
  • Required marketing, refurbishment and technology expenditure.
  • Personal guarantees, payment security and currency exposure.
  • Renewal, transfer, termination and inventory exit arrangements.

These are diligence questions, not claims about a standard Benetton contract. The actual proposal determines which apply.

Prepare the decision

Bring together a store forecast, funding evidence, operator track record and unresolved commercial terms before approving the investment. Star Brands Consulting Group provides independent opportunity and contract-structure assessment through Private Advisory. Brand appointments and product-supply commitments require approval from the authorised company.
