FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITY REVIEW · 15 OCTOBER 2025
Mega MGC Coffee is moving from a predominantly South Korean growth story into an international franchise proposition. By October 2025, the brand had an operating base in Mongolia, a master-franchise route into Cambodia and a newly established overseas business unit signalling wider global expansion intent.
For investors and operators watching Asian food-and-beverage franchises, Mega MGC Coffee is increasingly relevant beyond South Korea. The important point is not that every country is automatically available; it is that the company had begun building a repeatable overseas expansion model using local partners and master-franchise structures.
From domestic scale to overseas expansion
Mega MGC Coffee built its domestic network around a value-led coffee format and, by March 2025, had surpassed 3,500 stores in South Korea. During 2025 the company was targeting further domestic growth while also creating a dedicated overseas business function.
In August 2025, Mega MGC Coffee’s overseas business head said the company had established its overseas business division in April and was keeping global expansion possibilities open as international interest in Korean franchise brands increased. At that point, the brand had five stores in Mongolia, following its first overseas opening in Ulaanbaatar in May 2024.
This matters because Mongolia was no longer simply a one-store test. It gave the company an operating base from which to learn about localisation, supply, pricing, training and partner management outside Korea.
Cambodia added a second international franchise route
In September 2025, Mega MGC Coffee announced a master-franchise agreement with a Cambodian partner, creating a second overseas market after Mongolia. The first Cambodian store was planned for the following year.
By 9 October 2025, BRIDGE Bank and Saisons Company had also announced financing support for entrepreneurs interested in purchasing Mega MGC Coffee franchises through Saisons in Cambodia. That financing initiative was Cambodia-specific, but it provides useful evidence of how local master-franchise partners may build sub-franchise networks.
The broader opportunity is therefore not limited to Cambodia. The more important strategic signal is Mega MGC Coffee’s move towards partner-led international expansion.
What “global franchise opportunity” should mean to an investor
A global expansion strategy does not mean that every country is currently open for franchise applications. Prospective investors should distinguish between three levels of opportunity:
- Operating overseas markets: markets where the brand already has stores and local operating infrastructure.
- Contracted expansion markets: markets where a master-franchise or local-rights agreement has been announced but rollout is still developing.
- Future target markets: countries where the brand may be open to suitable partners but where rights, timing and commercial terms must still be confirmed.
That distinction is essential when approaching any international franchise brand. A market may be strategically attractive without being commercially available.
The likely route is partnership-led, not casual single-unit entry
Mega MGC Coffee’s overseas moves point towards a structured local-partner model. For a serious investor or operating group, the relevant questions are likely to include:
- Does the brand want a master franchisee, area developer, joint-venture partner or another route?
- What country-development capability and local operating experience are required?
- How many stores or territories would the partner be expected to develop?
- What supply-chain, training and quality-control systems must be established locally?
- Which menu items and store formats can be localised?
- What capital must be available beyond the first store?
These questions matter because a master-franchise opportunity is fundamentally different from buying one domestic outlet. The investor may be responsible for market development, local infrastructure, sub-franchise support and long-term brand stewardship.
Market fit should be tested before rights discussions deepen
Mega MGC Coffee’s value positioning may be attractive in price-sensitive and high-frequency coffee markets, but international success will depend on more than Korean brand recognition.
Investors should test local coffee consumption, average ticket, rent, labour, delivery-platform usage, competitor density, customer familiarity with Korean brands, supply-chain requirements and the economics of localisation. A format that performs well in Seoul may require changes in store size, menu mix or operating model elsewhere.
How STAR Brands would assess a Mega MGC Coffee opportunity
We would separate the decision into five workstreams:
- Rights: confirm whether the target country is available and who has authority to negotiate it.
- Market: test demand, competition, price positioning and rollout geography.
- Capital: assess the complete development commitment, not only the first-store budget.
- Partner capability: evaluate operating team, supply chain, real estate, local relationships and governance.
- Execution: establish the sequence from agreement to flagship opening, local adaptation and wider rollout.
The opportunity is therefore best viewed as an emerging international franchise and master-franchise proposition—not as a blanket promise that every market is currently available.
